Cossack patrols will assist law enforcers in Russia’s Sochi during the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup, the chief of Kuban Cossack Group said.

“We received a proposal from the Interior Ministry of the Krasnodar Region to send additional groups of Cossacks to provide security during the Confederations Cup 2017, which will take place June 19 to 29 ”, Nikolay Doluda said.

He added that 370 cossacks will be responsible for security.

Sochi is one of 11 Russian cities that will host the 2017 Confederations Cup and FIFA World Cup 2018.

Historically, Cossacks were a caste of warriors that protected Russia’s southern borders. Modern Cossack groups assisted the police in maintaining security during the  2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi
