Filming in Valaam in the Republic of Karelia

Valaam: how to get there?
Valaam archipelago is located in the northern part of Lake Ladoga, 22 km from the mainland. There are several ways to get there:
- From Saint Petersburg by hydrofoil (about 4 hours). But this way is only possible with the tour: there are no scheduled sailings from Petersburg directly.
- From St Petersburg to Priozersk by train (2-3 hours) or bus. Then from Priozersk to Valaam by hydrofoil (approximately 1 hour).
- From St Petersburg to Sortavala by train or bus, then by hydrofoil (about 45 min.). You can also rent the motorboat to Valaam in Sortavala port.
Valaam archipelago
The archipelago consists of more than 50 islands. Most tourists visit only the main one. But they are missing out a chance to enjoy the serenity and beautiful landscape away from the main tourist crowds. The best way to explore the archipelago is to rent a boat.
The landscapes of the islands are really stunning: thick forests, sheer cliffs, capes and bays, sunsets, reflecting in the Ladoga`s crystal water… Almost 500 species of plants grow on the archipelago, and the fauna is amazingly diverse too. Valaam monastery
Founded in the 14th century (or even in the 10th, according to some legends), Monastery of the Transfiguration of the Saviour is one of the oldest Russian monasteries. Closed during the Soviet era, now it`s open again: more than 100 monks are living here these days.
The central building of Valaam monastery is the five-domed cathedral, but there are numerous smaller churches and sketes (hermitages) in the island.
The monastery`s territory also includes few hotels for the tourists and pilgrims, café, big farm and shop with the souvenirs.
