Vladimir Region played one of the most important parts in Russian history.  

By the 13th century, it was the largest economic, political and cultural center of ancient Russia. It was then when two well-known masterpieces of ancient Russian architecture were built: the Assumption Cathedral and the Church of the Intercession on the Nerli.

Vladimir’s glory ended in 1238, when it was captured and burned to the ground by the Mongols. 

During WWII, Vladimir Region was one of the main arms manufacturer that sent over 1,200,000 various weapons to the front.

Nowadays, Vladimir region is one of the most urbanised and infrastructurally developed regions in Russia

In total, there are more than 3,000 objects of cultural heritage.

The biggest city and the capital is Vladimir with 350,000 people in it. Vladimir is a part of the Russian Golden Ring and is famous for its traditional white stone architecture and monumental Orthodox cathedrals. Other notable old Russian cities are Suzdal and Murom.

Vladimir is located just 194 km (120 mi) from Moscow. It takes about three and a half hours on a vehicle to get there. There is an airport in Vladimir region, but it operates flights only to St. Petersburg.

  • During the times of Russian Empire, Vladimir was one of the most developed regions. The first telegraph was opened there in 1858, the first railroad in 1861 and the first power plant in 1896;
  • Following the footsteps of the legendary Icarus, a peasant made wings in 1565 and flew from the Tsar's palace in Vladimir region. The result is not known;
  • Isaac Levitan, a classical Russian landscape painter lived in Vladimir in 1892. Some of his most famous paintings were made there;
  • Dormition Cathedral is on the few churches in Russia with authentic wall paintings by the legendary master Andrei Rublev;
